Overview:
PFKFB4 (also known as 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase-4) regulates the steady-state concentration of fructose-2, 6-bisphosphate, a potent activator of a key regulatory enzyme of glycolysis pathway called phosphofructokinase. Isozymes of PFKFB differ in the regions surrounding the catalytic core, which are important for the differential response to allosteric effectors and hormonal signals in different tissues (1). PFKFB4 is highly expressed in brain, heart, liver, muscle, placenta, adipose tissue, ovary, fallopian tubes, and testis (2).
