Overview:

PRKY or protein kinase, Y-linked, pseudogene is a novel serine/threonine subtype of protein kinase that appears to encode a protein related to the catalytic subunit of the cAMP-dependent protein kinases which are key players in the cellular responses to the second messenger cAMP. PRKY gene is classified as a transcribed pseudogene because it has lost a coding exon that results in all transcripts being candidates for nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) and unlikely to express a protein (1). Abnormal XY interchange between a novel isolated protein kinase gene, PRKY, and its homologue, PRKX, accounts for one third of all (Y+)XX males and (Y-)XY females (2).
