Overview:

Activins are dimeric growth and differentiation factors belonging to the TGF-beta superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins that signal through a heteromeric complex of receptor serine kinases which include at least two type I (I and IB) and two type II (II and IIB) receptors (1). Activin receptor type-2B (ACVR2B) has been shown to regulate muscle growth (2), and is associated with visceral heterotaxy (3). ACVR2B is a transmembrane protein composed of a ligand-binding extracellular domain with cysteine-rich region, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic kinase domain with predicted serine/threonine specificity.
