Overview:
RIOK3 or RIO kinase 3 is a novel cytoplasmic component of pre-40S pre-ribosomal particle(s) in human cells which is required for normal processing of the 21S pre-rRNA (1). RIOK3 is identified by the similarity of its product to the Aspergillus nidulans SUDD protein, an extragenic suppressor of the heat-sensitive bimD6 mutation that fails to attach properly to the spindle microtubules at a restrictive temperature. RIOK3 is highly expressed in human tissues, with additional smaller transcripts present in testis (2).
