Overview:
Belongs to the actin-related protein (Arp) superfamily whose primary sequences exhibited similarity, but not identity, to conventional actin. Along with Arp3 and 5 other proteins, ACTR2 makes up the evolutionary conserved Arp2/3 complex that was first identified in Acanthamoeba using profiling affinity chromatography and is an essential and ubiquitous component of the actin filament network. Functions as ATP-binding component of the Arp2/3 complex which is involved in regulation of actin polymerization and together with an activating nucleation-promoting factor (NPF) mediates the formation of branched actin networks.
