Overview:
5'-AMP-activated protein kinase subunit gamma-3 (AMPKG1) is an AMP/ATP-binding subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an energy sensor protein kinase that plays a key role in regulating cellular energy metabolism. Ablation of the gamma-3 subunit is associated with impaired glycogen resynthesis in skeletal muscle In contrast, naturally occurring mutations in the gamma-3 subunit increase glycogen storage in skeletal muscle, which may enhance glycogen storage by shifting the metabolic fate of glucose from oxidation to storage.
